What Nurses Deal With on a Typical Night Shift

On a busy night shift an LPN asked for my help for a patient whose rectum prolapsed to almost a size of an apple. As soon as I finished dealing with my patient who was in pain I attended to the request.

I put on my PPEs and we laid down the patient onto her side. I asked the patient to take a couple of slow deep breaths. Using a warm and clean medical wipes I then started gently pushing in the prolapse. The procedure took less than two minutes and was successful. The patient tolerated it OK and quickly settled.

This was my first experience dealing with this type of medical condition. It felt good to be able to help the patient and my colleague. I thought this skill could lead me to being a trauma nurse or something.

Nursing profession offers a wide variety of interesting cases. This is a profession that requires commitment. While it can be physically and mentally exhausting, nursing is one the most fulfilling jobs out there.

On a side note, I don’t know where this blog will lead me to. It’ll be interesting to go back to this post in ten years. Only time can tell which nursing specialty or profession I will eventually pursue. For now, I feel that journaling my experience will lead to something bigger and great.

What about you? Is there any unique case that you have handled in your nursing career? Comment your experience and I’d be happy to learn from it.
